Edinburgh University Swimming and Water Polo

Edinburgh make their mark on the University Long Course scene

Edinburgh's swimmers took to the pool again last weekend in the latest round of BUCS competition, this particular event being the Long Course (50m) Championships, held at Ponds Forge complex in Sheffield. Despite having a smaller team than the one which came in 5th place at the Short Course Championships, the eight swimmers involved all contributed to Edinburgh's overall 7th place finish.

This was the first major University meet to be held since the new FINA rules banning hi-tech swimsuits were brought into force in January. This, coupled with the competition being during hard training for many of the swimmers, made for an interesting and at times tough meet as the competitors adapted to the latest rule change. A number of Edinburgh's swimmers had also just returned from a successful month long Commonwealth training camp in Australia, and so were ready to race and see where their times stood amongst the University elite.

Men's 1sts polo qualify for BUCS Semis

Today it was confirmed that the men's 1st polo team have made it to BUCS Semi Finals for another year running.

The men will now join the women's 1st team in the competition in Walsall, England on the 26th-28th February.

In a tough qualifying campaign last semester, the 1sts were originally beaten by Leeds but recovered to defeat both Durham and Newcastle. Last weekend Leeds saw off Durham to win the group and confirm Edinburgh as qualifiers in second place.

Both the men and women now wait to see who they will be drawn against for the semi finals, where teams are drawn into groups of 4 with the top 2 making it through to the finals on the 12th-14th March.

The women's 1sts won all three of their qualifying matches last semester, winning their group and gaurenteeing their progression to semis.

Team Edinburgh keep up good performances at Nationals

 Callum Shaw in action

Edinburgh University's swimmers were straight back in action last week with the 2010 Scottish National Short Course Championships taking place at Tollcross in Glasgow.

After the banning of all hi-tech and textile suits, this was the first time swimmers could get to grips with having to swim in basic kneeskins and swimwear. With this meet also being right after the Christmas break, any PBs would be a fairly impressive challenge to overcome.
